2019 WWDC Predictions

jbiatek 25th October 2023 at 1:44pm
Winner: Stephen

▶️ Episodes

In episode 245, Stephen mentions accidentally sending "Ricky" instead of "risky" in an iMessage, which ends up being a major shift in branding for the Connected predictions game.

🥇 Regular Picks

HostPickScore
Myke Regular "Dark mode for iOS" 1
Stephen Regular "iOS 13 will change the system requirements, dropping devices supported by iOS 12" 1
Federico Regular "New Animoji in iOS 13" 1
  • Ungraded: Federico had some specific predictions which were not written down: at least 4, maybe 5, a demo on stage, would like to see kangaroo, peacock, squirrel, or white rat as new animals.
Myke Regular "Apple will mention Apple Arcade during the keynote" 1
Stephen Regular "Apple replaces at least one bundled macOS app with a Marzipan version" 1
  • It's called Catalyst, not Marzipan, which is pushed back on a little. Podcasts is cited as fulfilling this (is it replacing a Mac app? Stephen gets away with this a bit) and they say that Messages might now be a Catalyst app, but in fact it isn't.
  • The permissive grading may be due to the other hosts not wanting to get too picky when it comes to grading later picks.
Federico Regular "iOS gets expanded font support" 1

⚠️ Risky Picks

HostPickScore
Myke Risky "Cursor support for iOS" 2
  • Was not mentioned in the keynote, but more information came out during the week about the new accessibility feature.
Stephen Risky "The HomePod will gain multiple user support via voice detection" 2
Federico Risky "Apple will bring back some kind of "app list/launcher" UI element on iPad" 2
  • Federico cites parts of Slide Over's new multitasking interface, and when that doesn't seem to be working, says "If you don't give me this point, I will call the police." It escalates to the point of typing 911 into his phone.
  • "Some kind of" is vague enough to count this, and it definitely is not because of the threat.

🏆 Scores

  1. Stephen: 4
  2. Myke: 4
  3. Federico: 4

It's a 3 way tie! How do you flip a coin between 3 people? A knockout tournament, where you "keep flipping until there's one man standing", apparently.

The rules are more clearly explained: each host will guess heads or tails, and then the coin will be flipped. Wrong answers are knocked out, unless all of them are wrong. Jason Snell comes on stage to handle things. He can't flip a coin, so he'll ask Siri.

For flip number 1, Myke and Federico pick heads, Stephen picks tails. The result is tails, knocking out Myke and Federico and giving Stephen the win.

Flip number 2 decides second place, with Federico taking heads. However, it is tails, putting Myke in second and Federico last.

Non-Graded Picks

HostPickScore
Myke Non‑graded "Apple does some new stuff with Animoji to make it more like Bitmoji" 1
Stephen Non‑graded "Mail.app will get modern features like snoozing" 0.5
  • Threads can be muted, which isn't what he was talking about, really.
  • As these are "ungraded picks" being, uh, graded, Stephen is given a half point because why not.
  • Apple finally added a few features to Mail in 2022 including snoozing.
Federico Non‑graded "There will be changes to the drawing/sketching interface used for screenshots, notes, etc." 1
  • "Maybe it will even be an API."
Myke Non‑graded "External storage support on iOS" 1
Stephen Non‑graded "iCloud family photo sharing" 0
  • Finally got added in 2022 at WWDC.
Federico Non‑graded "Improved support for ZIP archives in the Files app and framework" 1

The non-graded picks have mild stakes added: the loser must buy a round of drinks.

🍹 Non-Graded Scores

  • Myke: 2 out of 2
  • Federico: 2 out of 2
  • Stephen: 0.5 out of 2

Stephen owes drinks to the other two.
